Renovating Your Furniture: Where To Start?

Renovating old furniture can sometimes mean you have to perform some small repairs or add something that looks brand new. From the height of the piece to handle selection; colour to surface texture; sanding to a polished finish...The choices made are all dependent on your wants and needs.

You’re going to be taking the first step into a new era in your home and you want your furniture to come together harmoniously as a whole.

You can start to achieve this harmony by finding new colours, patterns and functions for your collection.

You know your house better than anyone - from which colours will work best for your seat covers to how much natural light you have to work with. So, how can you take an old piece that you know and love, and make it fun and new for the baby’s room you want to put it in? Ask yourself questions and brainstorm about the design as much as possible, so that by the time you come to putting your plan into action, you’re confident in  what you want and how to achieve it.

Of course, we’ll be on hand to help with different methods throughout the process.

Ways To Reinvent Seating - Functional And Decorative

When picking out the new parts you want to add when refurbishing, be sure to take note of anything that needs to be repaired too. Getting rid of any damage will prolong your furniture’s lifetime.

During seat renovation, the best place to start is to remove all parts until just the intact frame is left.

This includes any cushioning, fabric and old joints (nails, screws etc.). Then sand down the frame to smooth the surface and expose any defects. You can mend any cracks with sealant and replace old and broken joints with new ones.

Then the fun begins - it’s time to start assembling the seat according to your brand new design! At this stage, consider the way you want the structure of the seat to be. For example, you could create a new style and find a solution to damage by combining two broken feet and turning them into one to make a corner seat.

Arguably, the most important part of renovating your seating space is choosing the right fabric for your upholstery. This is the part you will come into contact with the most and the part that will be the most visible to any visitors.

When choosing your colours for the seating area, remember to choose the colour and texture for the parts of the frame that will be visible from the outside.

For example, if you want to highlight the colour of your cushion fabric, you can choose a dark shade for the frame. For a rustic look, you can paint the wooden frame and choose an earthy fabric colour for the upholstery. At the same time, you can use throw pillows in different colors and textures to break the monotony of furniture with a very large surface, such as a corner set.

Creative Cupboard Renovation Ideas

Although they’re not a main focus, cupboards are one of the most important contributors to seamless interior design. Built in cupboards, whether single or part of a set, can determine the boundaries of the home. When renovating cupboards, there are 3 things that can turn it into a completely different piece of furniture.

First off is the cupboard door. Here, you can make a difference not only in terms of a change in colour or texture, but also in terms of material. For example, for tall doors, you can add a glass panel to provide a view into the cupboard. As well as this, you can use three-dimensional patterns, carvings and even fabric coverings. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your design - make it work for you and the feel that you want to create in your home.

Secondly, you can create more practical solutions for your cupboard by changing the type of door. Let’s take a cupboard door that opens outwards on a hinge. You want to put this piece in a narrow space so what can you do? Replace the existing door with a sliding one and problem solved!

And thirdly is the cupboard handles. Handle selection is very important when talking about cupboards, especially free standing ones.

The location of your cupboard can help determine which handles to choose. For example, with a kitchen cupboard, you’ll be using it frequently so you’ll want to choose handles that are easy to clean and easy to open.

Which Materials To Use For Your Renovations

When renovating, there are numerous techniques you can try to achieve the designs of your dreams. You can use your desired colour combinations on your fabrics and on the framework of your furniture.

For a different look, why not try applying gold or silver paint with a crackling effect, to the slits and cracks? Or you can sand down the old paint and polish the surface to reveal the original design and material. At this stage, you can use wood sealant to seal up any old cracks in the raw material.

For a unique look for your table or coffee table, you can use epoxy resin to cover the crackers. This adhesive is well known for its strength and durability.

Using wicker mesh can soften the appearance of your furniture. If you’d prefer a heavier look, you can use matte fabrics instead. And adding patterned prints will bring some life to your furniture - guaranteed to liven up any piece.
